Samsung has officially launched its first foldable smartphone under the name of Galaxy Fold. Read more details here.
Aside from the highly anticipated and well-received Samsung Galaxy S10 series that the South Korean company officially launched at an Unpacked Event in San Francisco yesterday, the Korean giant also took the opportunity to finally reveal to the world its first ever foldable smartphone simply called Galaxy Fold.
Samsung says with this new device and absolutely new mobile category, users will be able to enjoy powerful new ways to multitask, watch videos, play games, and many more. Samsung's President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, DJ Koh said "We created Galaxy Fold for those that want to experience what a premium foldable device can do, beyond the limitations of a traditional smartphone."
Indeed new product innovations like the foldable devices are very exciting to have as an alternative option in between a tablet and a smartphone especially for those users who have deep pockets and are willing to shell out thousands of dollars. However, there are still a lot to be learned and experienced from this particular device to see if its starting price of $1,980 (Php103,000) is worth the spend. As of writing we can only judge this new device from what Samsung presented on stage during the Unpacked event as there was no available hands-on unit at the event for attendees to try, so personal insights and experiences coming from gadget enthusiasts is not available at the moment. Again, from what we saw during the presentation, it is a cool and an impressive piece of technology.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold's main 7.3-inch display is on the inside when folded and the from the outside, users will have the 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED panel also known as the Cover Display. The main screen shares the same and brand new Dynamic AMOLED display found on the Galaxy S10 series which is of course way way better than the already-great Super AMOLED. Both of these display technologiy are developed by Samsung itself.
Underneath the Galaxy Fold is a staggering 12GB RAM and a non-expandable 512GB internal storage with UFS 3.0 technology. UFS 3.0 or Universal Flash Storage 3.0 offers to provide higher data transfer speed and increased reliability. It's just super fast. It has a single SIM slot that supports up to 5G network technology. Samsung Dex is also being offered here where user can connect this device to a desktop monitor for a PC-like experience. And Bixby is also joining the party.
In the camera department, Samsung wanted to make sure it has all the bells and whistles of what they currently offer on the market. That said, the Galaxy Fold is equipped with a total of six camera shooters. Three on the back (16MP Ulrawide with f2.2, 12MP Wideangle with Dual Pixel, OIS and up to f1.5 aperture, and 12MP Telephoto lens with PDAF, OIS, F2.4 and 2X Optical Zoom). Two on the front (10MP selfie camera with f2.2 and 8MP RGB depth camera with f1.9). One on the cover (10MP selfie camera with f2.2.)
Samsung said they equipped the Galaxy Fold with two separate battery packs combining a total 4380mAh juice altogether. This also supports fast charging as well as wireless charging.
