Sony has officially unveiled the upcoming PlayStation 5 DualSense controller which now sports new design. Read more here.
Sony introduced the DualSense
This brand new wireless controller is officially called the DualSense. For the very first time in the past two decades, the controller now sports a completely brand new design and aesthetics as we can see in the official press render above. Much has been changed in terms of looks compared to the DualShock series in the past installments. One of the most noticeable ones is that it now sports two-tone color scheme similar to the PSVR or to a Stormtrooper.Of course not only the design has been improved here, Sony added new features to the DualSense while at the same time retaining some from the DualShock 4, especially those that have been received positively by the fans. With this one, gamers will get to enjoy the new features like haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, integrated microphone, and the long overdue USB Type-C port.
DualShock's rumble vibration is no more
The rumble vibration feature from DualShock is now being replaced with a much improved haptic feedback. According to Sony, this will offer a "variety of powerful sensations you'll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud."The adaptive triggers, on the other hand, have been incorporated with L2 and R2 buttons. Like the haptic feedback, this will also offer gamers a much more immersive gaming experience in terms of feels as the buttons' resistance will depend on what's going on in the game "like when drawing a bow to shoot an arrow" as per Sony.
Latest addition to the DualSense is the integrated microphone that according to Sony can be used by gamers for a quick chat with friends and fellow players without the need to put a headset on. But still the company recommends wearing one especially for longer conversations and game play sessions.
Also, the Share button is no longer present on the DualSense. But it is not going away, Sony said in the announcement blog. Instead, it is now being replaced with the "Create" button which will basically offer the same functionality or maybe even more as Sony said they "will have more details on this feature as we get closer to launch."
Sony Interactive Entertainment, through the blog post, confirmed that they have started shipping the DualSense to game developers so they can begin working on their games and incorporate these new features from the controller.
"In all, we went through several concepts and hundreds of mockups over the last few years before we settled on this final design. DualSense has been tested by a wide range of gamers with a variety of hand sizes, in order for us to achieve the comfort level we wanted, with great ergonomics. Our goal with DualSense is to give gamers the feeling of being transported into the game world as they open the box. We want gamers to feel like the controller is an extension of themselves when they're playing - so much so that they forget that it's even in their hands!" shared by Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning and Management.
