It's official, Google revealed that the recently announced Android M will be formally called Marshmallow. It is also important to note that the new mobile OS is a 6.0 version and not five-point-something, which means it is a major update from the current Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
It is Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
The Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS was first previewed and unveiled at Google I/O conference last May was then called Android M, you know to build up anticipation. This was the same path Google took when they released the Android 5.0 Lollipop last year, it had an initial name of Android L a couple of months back.
We had the Android Kitkat for "K" and Lollipop for the "L". Marshmallow was one of the widely claimed next moniker by fans to be the next Android OS, but many hoped for M&M's (because of Kitkat I think) and even Muffin and some other M-started sweets and desserts.

This Android 6.0 Marshmallow is expected to be released in the public and to all supported Android smartphones and tablets later this year, either October or November. A lot of new features and design language are promised to sport in this new OS.
